Layout
Scrapbooking: How It can Help
You.
Before you start scrapbooking layout for any
project or event it is easiest and ultimately quickest to make
a scrapbooking layout sketch of what you want your page to look
like first.
This will do three things for you.
1. Save Time
You will save time when you actually start your
scrapbooking layout. If you already know how you want to layout
your pictures ahead of time, think of how many pages you could
actually get done.
2. Save Materials
Making a scrapbooking layout sketch
of your page or pages first saves on materials because you can
easily change a sketch or start again and all you've lost is a
few moments of time, unlike when I first started I started
experimenting with layouts by actually doing the page and I
wasted so much of my best paper and borders by changing my mind
once I saw what it looked like. So sketch first and then you'll
know exactly what you need before you start cutting up your
best materials into shape.
3. Get You Started Sooner
I found when I would think of getting started
on a scrapbooking layout project what sometimes stopped me was
having to get all the materials out to get going when I
sometimes only had a small block of time. But when I started
each project with a scrapbooking layout sketch all i needed to
do that was a pencil and paper and I could do it virtually
anywhere. Once I had my layout sketch completed that gave me
added incentive to get started on the project.
A notebook or sketch pad to keep all your
scrapbooking layout ideas
in as a great idea. You will have them all in the one place and
you can also keep it with you wherever you go and when ideas
come simply record them before you lose them.
I find I have no trouble coming up with great
ideas it's keeping these scrapbooking ideas that I have had
trouble with so I always keep a notebook handy to jot down the
odd flash of brilliance :-)
The first thing you may wish to put in your
scrapbooking layout sketch is the title.
Obviously on a 1 page spread it's usually at
the top but it can be anywhere really as long as it suggests
the theme and catches people attention.
On a 2 page spread it's often on the first page
but it can also be virtually anywhere such as:
- Horizontally across the page (top, middle or
bottom)
- Vertically down the left- or right-hand side of the
page
- Lower right-hand corner of the page
The name of the event and the date of it are
useful things to include in the title. It makes for easy
reference when people flick through your scrapbook.
If you see a layout of magazine cover that
catches your attention or an advertisement somewhere that
caught your eye, have a look at it for a second or two and ask
yourself; what is it about that layout that caught my eye.
By that I mean:
- Where was the title
- How big is the title text in relation to the rest
of the page
- Where are the picture placed, how are they
used
- Anything different used to catch attention? Such as
shapes, background embellishments?
Once you have sketched out where you think your
various elements should go, use old card stock to cut out the
shapes and see how they fit on the page or pages. This will
save you money again as you won't waste your best paper on a
test.
Remember when sketching your scrapbooking
layout you are looking for:
- balance -it needs to look and feel right
- making it interesting with the shapes you use
- informative
- pleasing to the eye
Good luck with your scrapbooking projects.
